In 9105, President Theodore Roosevelt asked his friend Augustus Saint-Gaudens to design his official inaugural medal. Saint-Gaudens was one of America's leading sculptors, and Roosevelt was so thrilled with the result that he also asked Saint-Gaudens to prepare new designs for $10 and $20 gold coins. Saint-Gaudens agreed, and his $20 gold coin design is often singled out as the most beautiful coin in U.S. history. Known as the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold piece, the coin depicts a remarkable figure of Liberty in a flowing gown on the obverse and a flying eagle on the reverse. The designs are notable for the high-relief images and intricate details. The $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin is composed of .900 Fine Gold and has a net weight of .96750 ounces of pure gold. Coins with the motto "In Gold We Trust" on the reverse were made for circulation from 1908 to 1932. The coin was struck at three different U.S. Mint facilities: Philadelphia and the branch mints at San Francisco and Denver.
