Elkie Brooks - Pearl's a singer 1977

Pearl's a singer
She stands up when she plays the piano
In a nightclub

Pearl's a singer
She sings songs for the lost and the lonely
Her job is entertaining folks
Singings songs and telling jokes
In a nightclub

Pearl's a singer
And they say that she once was a winner
In a contest

Pearl's a singer
And they say that she once cut a record
They played it for a week or so
On the local radio
It never made it

She wanted to be Betty Grable
But now she sits there at that beer stained table
Dreaming of the things she never got to do
All those dreams that never came true

Pearl's a singer
She stands up when she plays the piano
In a nightclub

Pearl's a singer
She sings songs for the lost and the lonely
Her job is entertaining folks
Singing songs and telling jokes
In a nightclub

Pearl's a singer
She stands up when she plays the piano
In a nightclub

Pearl's a singer
She sings songs for the lost and the lonely
Her job's entertaining folks
Singing songs, telling jokes
In a nightclub

  • This is the kind of music we kids used to ridicule back in the '80s. Well... last month i took my retired parents to a resort for the weekend - 65 year old Elkie Brooks was the evening entertainment. I had no idea what to expect but was a bit sceptical (a burned-out former star maybe?). Guess what? She was brilliant. Highly engaging, incredible powerful voice and ace backing band. An excellent 1hr set. I was stunned! 2010 is Elkie's 50th year in the music business. Respect is due!

  • spectacular - I had the 45 of this song...man this brings back memories

  • lf you think this is good, check out her 2006 version...outstanding. She never sang it better, and she was l think 61 then. Elkie's looks might not be what they once were but the voice just seems to get better with the years.

  • LOOOOVVVVVEEEE this song :D

  • What a talented, classy girl she is, nothing but raw passion in her performances, compare her to today`s shallow `celebrities` also in this clip, she is soooooooooooo sexy.

  • re:RadNomad... is that a privelege..? When you say ageing, what do you mean? The horror of being trapped in a 17yr olds body with the mind of... well someone who is not 17... I may write something...

The Greeks covered it with someone fading away... I see further/// thanks for the inspiration xxx

  • a gal x

  • @MimaJenson Totally agree, would be great to see Elkie back in the charts, adding a touch of class.
