Ahhh... thank you. I almost had it figured out. What was screwing me up was I kept the left hand in the traditional grip position (as one would flipping/back sticking on the snare between traditional and matched grip) I didn't think to just palm the stick and switch out of traditional or match grip -- discarding them altogether -- that's what was throwing me off.
