Clear Cuts

This rough cut features Qwatsinas of the Nuxalk Nation who inhabit the central coast of British Columbia and Zoe Blunt from the Forest Action Network. I shot the footage a few years ago at Wild Earth, an eco-activist camp on Vancouver Island. The footage is standard definition. Since then, I have shot shocking clear cuts in Oregon using a Panasonic AG-HVX200A. Below are some photos of that shoot. The archival footage comes from Archive.org, Pickaxe and Qwatsinas collection. The music is by stig inge oy.

OK rain forests soil is much older and more highly weathered than our soil, after clear cutting they can only plant crops for a 10 more years max. Our soil is much "younger", have you seen a mountain covered in forest??? History lesson100 years ago this entire continent was clear cut. Open your eyes any ground that is not suitable for crops, or not being used by people for other means is forested, it was all clear cut very little is remaining.

wtf are you talking about.......the video says how it fucks the soil from runoff due to loss of root support and full exposure to uv.....no regrowth.....even if they did plant a tree there....doesnt mean it survived....really dont think they give a fuck either.....do you???

When we pre-maturely clearcut forests, it does more than just destroy trees, it upsets the entire balance of an ecosystem, and this is a BAD thing. If you want evidence of more permanent clearcutting, look to the rainforests where they're being clearcutted at an unimaginable rate and species we never even knew have been and will be lost forever. It is NOT our place to destroy and exploit the planet's resources as we please.

Is this like a joke... trees are a renewable resource.. in the eastern united states i was all clear cut do you still see trees...yea. Trees die and they make a way for their species to continue that is the point. Old growth can only last so long its beautiful but it will die of disease, insects, fire, old age, ect. It will die.
