Welcome to "Violence in the Workplace: Awareness and Prevention."

This interactive and informative training session is presented by the Compliance Training Group, a division of Diversified Risk Management, Incorporated. This course is not meant to serve as legal opinion or as a substitute for legal advice.

Although there is no precise measure of the full extent and cost of violence in the workplace, it represents a major challenge, affecting an estimated 1.7 million employees directly and millions more indirectly each year. A violent act in the workplace affects more than just people directly threatened or harmed; it affects the entire workforce, disrupts business activity, damages morale, and creates medical and legal expenses. Everyone shares in the obligation to keep the workplace safe and violence-free.

The following learning objectives serve as educational and practical tools organizations can use as resources in developing policies, structures, and practices to help prevent and manage the range of inappropriate behaviors that fall within the framework of workplace violence.

Violence in the workplace is defined as a broad range of behaviors falling along a spectrum, due to their nature and/or severity, which significantly affect the workplace, generate a concern for personal safety, or could result in physical injury or death.

At the low end of the workplace violence spectrum lie disruptive, hostile, or aggressive behaviors that create a climate of distrust or anxiety, and can negatively affect productivity and morale. (Verbal abuse, yelling, property damage)

Further along the spectrum are words or other actions that are perceived to be threatening, frightening or intimidating and that generate a concern for personal safety. (Ex: threats, stalking, and harassment)

At the high end of the spectrum are overt acts of violence causing physical injury, such as: hitting, kicking, biting or, in worst cases, lethal violence inflicted by stabbing, shooting, or by any other means.

A number of factors may increase workers' risk for workplace assault, including:

Contact with the public
Exchange of money
Delivery of passengers, goods, or services
Having a mobile workplace such as taxicab or police cruiser
Working with unstable or volatile persons in health care, social services, or criminal justice settings
Working alone or in small numbers
Working late at night or during early morning hours
Working in high crime areas
Guarding valuable property or possessions

Later in this presentation we will review some preventative strategies that will assist in reducing the risk of violence associated with these factors.

Thank you.
