When You Smoke, You Inhale Over 4000 Chemicals / PSA Video. Public domain video.

Tobacco smoke has long been recognized as a major cause of mortality and morbidity, responsible for an estimated 434,000 deaths per year in the United States. It is also a source of indoor air pollution due to the release of harmful chemicals, particles, and carcinogens. Exposure to tobacco smoke affects everybody. Children are more vulnerable than any other age group because they are still growing and developing. Tobacco smoke from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes is composed of more than 4,000 different chemicals including carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. More than forty of these compounds are known to cause cancer in humans or animals, and many of them are strong irritants.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has concluded that exposure to tobacco smoke in the United States poses a serious and significant public health threat. New long-term studies estimate that about half of all regular cigarette smokers die of smoking-related diseases. However, controversy still surrounds the exact extent of such health effects.

Attempts have been made to study the effect of tobacco smoke on individuals exposed to other toxic chemicals. The risk of developing lung cancer among asbestos workers grows when they smoke an increasing number of cigarettes per day and their cumulative asbestos exposure increases. Cigarette-smoking asbestos workers tend to develop both restrictive lung disease (decreased lung capacities) and chronic obstructive lung disease, as compared to nonsmoking asbestos workers who have a tendency to develop only restrictive lung disease.

In recent years, there has been great concern that nonsmokers may also be at risk for some of the above health effects as a result of their exposure to the tobacco smoke (known as secondhand smoke) that occurs in various environments occupied by smokers.

The tobacco industry has denied the claim of such health hazards and has legally challenged the EPA over its secondhand smoke findings. In addition, some researchers argue that a number of the studies involve flawed data or the selective interpretation of findings. Many of these critics contend that the health risks involved with secondhand smoke are not as extensive as reported.

  • Here is how I started smoking. One time when my girlfriend broke up with me I was so depressed I wanted to die so I started smoking. I thought smoking would be the least painful way to die. Since then me and my girlfriend got back toghether and had a beautiful baby boy. They day my son was born I told myself I would quit. I have found out that it is harder to quit smoking than start.

  • @SuperBubblesBabe I dont hate smokers. My best friend smokes. I wish he would stop. Hes going to kill himself. He started because it "Relieved his stress from his family troubles." His mom died 3 years ago. Dont hate smokers. Just hate the cigarettes. :(

  • @gamergeek i mean, what about people who smoke but aren't assholes about it? like someone who won't smoke around you if they knew you were uncomfortable? besides, i've never honestly heard of someone actually dying from secondhand smoke unless it came from a risk computer. i mean unless you were to purposely surround yourself with a whole room of people smoking cigarettes with all windows locked and you standing in the middle of it lol

  • @Memily296 I don't hate smokers but I do hate their arrogance and selfishness. There isn't a smoker alive today that agrees that they should be banned from public places. My non smoking habits will not kill a smoker, but their smoking habits will kill me, but they don't want to hear it. They want to smoke in my presence.

  • If you truly wanted to make a difference. You would be attacking your Government for allowing the tobacco Company's to put the 4000 chemicals into the product. You would also ask yourself why they let them and for what purpose. You might ask how have I become so self righteous and put down some other persons walk , when I obviously have no regard for my own safety spending ours in front of the computer soaking up the radiation its venting as you make 40 plus videos. Hypocrite.

  • Commercials and classes make Marijuana 10x worse than it actually is. Yes it's a drug and drugs are bad mmk but cigarettes are worse. So I know I might get shit comments replies for saying this but I feel focusing on why Marijuana is a bad is drug is less important than drinking. Drinking killed some of my family and one started meth WHILE he was drunk.

  • Wait. Is this about cigarettes or meth?

  • @jerrysmith29 Are you speaking Spanish? hmm looks like English to me. So it looks like you don't know how to spell and I'm not ignorant. Also your grammar is absolutely terrible. Might want to do some research before bashing cannabis?
