gorée (M J Reiter)

Gorée is a little island close to Dakar, the capitol of senegal. For a long time gorée has had a sad history because all african slaves brought by boat from western africa to the americas had to stay on this little and wait under unbelievable circumstances. I´ve been there with my band, visiting the island and experiencing an atmosphere of heat, sadness and people still suffering as if nothing had changed the last couple of hundred years. This visit was the inspiration to write this composition also called gorée, like the island.
The piece was recorded during a performance at the Zagreb Jazzfestival end of october 2008 with the
austrobrazilian ALMA-Band, feat.:
