Chapter 14
Sonny laughed and smeared a generous amount of the muddy substance onto Madges face. They were in the lofts spacious bathroom, giving each other facials. So how long have you been in the modeling business? Sonny asked, as she applied thick cold cream to her face. Madge sighed deeply. As long as I can remember. My agent says photographers discovered me at McDonalds, and I did a few commercials before modeling for places like The Childrens Place, and—my favorite—Limited Too. Ever since then, Ive taken all sorts of jobs, from commercial photoshoot to Neiman Marcus. Sonny raised her stiff caked eyebrows. Wow, thats quite a career. Madge shrugged. I got used to it. The photographers loved me because I was so photogenic. I always saw my life as normal. But I never had the chance to choose my future. By the time I had learned to talk, it had already been chosen.

The phone was ringing incessantly, but it could barely be heard over the clamor of many hired beauticians and makeup artists desperately scrambling to finish the whole casts makeup and hair on time. Sonny ignored it, thinking it was for one of the other girls. She herself felt glued to the makeup chair, her hair being painstakingly curled into thick, shiny ringlets. Someone was arranging the curls into a complex coif, while another person was applying so much makeup that Sonny hardly recognized herself. Everyone was running around like crazy. It was the last week of filming, and they were about to shoot one of the final scenes where Bella was making her acceptance speech into a prestigious singing school instead of a world famous modeling agency. It was supposed to be an emotional, drama packed scene and Sonny was already feeling the tension.
The boys and many extras would be in the scene, posing as the audience, and the girls were more concerned about their appearance than ever. Finally, one of the girls picked up the phone. Hello? she said irritably. Almost instantly, her tone changed. Allison! It took Sonny a moment to realize that she was being called. She turned her head slightly, trying to upset the delicate balance of curls and pins atop her head. The girl held out the phone receiver to her. Its for you! She looked excited. Puzzled, Sonny took it from her. The girls started whispering. Hello? There was a pause. Hello? Sonny was getting impatient. She had to be on set in only 10 minutes, and she wasnt even into her gown yet. Suddenly, she Chads voice. Hi Sonny, its Chad. There was a pause. Id like to talk to you. Can we talk after you shoot today? Sonny thought. She already knew there wouldnt be time. I cant. What do you want anyway? I can only tell you in person. Look, can I come by during lunch break? Sonny relented. Ok, but make it snappy. I have to be on set in a few minutes. Meet me in the loft garden set at noon. Bye. She hung up quickly, suddenly aware that all the girls were staring at her. Was that Chad Dylan Cooper? One of them dared to ask.
Sonny felt overwhelmed. She didnt know what to say. She stole a glance at Madge, who looked hurt. Without waiting to hear anymore, Sonny was out the door in an instant. She didnt even realize shed forgotten her dress.
The set was crowded and bustling with activity. Sonny glanced down and realized with a sinking feeling that she was still wearing her robe. Trying not to panic, she glanced around the set, searching the clothing racks for her lavender jewel incrusted gown. Then she spotted Vince. He was leaning against the door to one of the directors offices. He was dressed in a dapper suit, and he was holding her dress. She pushed her way through the crowd of crew members and sound people to where he was.
I need this. She grabbed the dress and tried to open the door. Vince stuck his hand out, hindering her. Youre welcome. Madge told me youd be looking for it. Sonny groaned. I bet she hates me now! Vince chuckled. Why? Sonny shook her head. Its a long story. Watch the door for me, will you? She slipped inside the office and changed as quickly as possible.
Vince knocked on the door. Are you decent? Sonny sucked her stomach in and zipped the back up before responding. Yes, she said. In a moment, he had slipped in. What are you-- Vince didnt let her finished. He pushed her against the wall and kissed her. She pulled back and looked at him. Youre the most beautiful girl here, you know that? She smiled and nodded, then grabbed him by his tie and kissed him back.
