  • 2) when I finally manage to cut and then I get to the chiseling out part, my chisel refuses to actually chip out the wood! I just end up DENTING the wood! Again, is there something special I should know about this step?

    Thanks!

  • Your chisel must have a razor sharp edge for this kind of work.

  • that is exellent John very informative, I can see me purchasing the book for xmas. if the two pieces of wood were of equal width, would you still do it all in the same order?

  • @sightsizemethod

If the wood is thicker, use a frame saw to remove socket waste before chiselling, as in my video 'Dovetail Joints Hand Cut', otherwise same order.

  • How do you know the angles for the dovetails? Do you just eye ball it?

  • @jpodejko

It isn't critical so you can judge by eye, but aim for between 1 in 6 and 1 in 8.

    Steeper angles for softer wood.

  • How in the heck... That took you under 5 mins... AMAZING.

  • Superb demonstration of a craftsman skill and the ability to show others, am now off to the workshop! Best Wishes from Basse-Normndie, Organikmechanic aka Andy

  • Will try the chisle marking tomorrow. Need to put faith in these marking lines and go for it. I think i saw and realise how it spins around! Thank you for you video.

  • I know you have a book and everything, but PLEASE upload more videos, they're brilliant!

  • Brilliant John. I am new to fine woodworking and just ordered your book on furniture making from Amazon. It might be covered in the book, but in case it's not can you comment on what I should look for in chisels. I have cheap sets now that I use for general work around the house when I renovate or build decks, but they would not be quality tools.

  • Good video, Mr. Bullar! I just ordered your book after trying your easy dovetails. They came out better than my regular attempts!

  • Hi there. First off, THANKS for this video. I see a lot of videos around that make handcut dovetails look extremely difficult, but this one gave me hope!

That being said, I encountered two issues, that I'm sure are just because I'm a real beginner, but I was wondering if you could help.

    1) When I go to cut, my saw keeps getting stuck! It allows me to cut pulling, but not pushing. A few times I managed to get the sawing action going, but it kept sticking, jumping and messing up the wood.

  • That's pretty cool. If I can't make it with a butt joint I don't make it. Never thought to do dovetails like this.
