Larry Potterfield, CEO and Founder of MidwayUSA, demonstrates the process for installing a short chambered barrel on a Mauser 98 receiver. This process allows anyone to re-barrel a rifle without the use of a lathe.

  • timing and torque are irrelevant with a short chambered barrel with no sights.

it simply doesn't matter how the barrel is lined up, as long as it is tight.

as for torque, that is up to you, and what you are comfortable with.

most gunsmiths I know, usually take it up to "Hand tight" make a mark, and then take it 1/8 inch past and that is good! Any tighter is simply not required

  • @mustang071 Unfortunately we can't provide a torque spec for barrel installation, you will have to consult a gunsmith. If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-243-3220. Our hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT; Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. CT.

  • what about the timing

  • Great video. Excellent, short explaination of how to install a barrel. I doubt Larry reads this posts, but maybe his minions do. If Larry produces more full length video gunsming videos (he has a couple out right now) he can run AGI out of business. Midway's video quality is second to none and his Larry's ability to teach is beyond dispute.

  • Larry, is there a recommended torque spec?

  • I totally agree

  • I was thinking the same thing. The finishing of the chamber, and headspacing is the part of the process that I'd like to see. I do love this series though.

  • attach those vices to the barrel of a firing gun and bam! no more recoil lol
