The grateful have gathered with bowed heads and hands over their hearts along Highway 78 in Douglas County, to welcome home the body of Lance Corporal Scott Harper.
The 21-year-old was killed in action in Afghanistan last week.
He is the only Douglas County native killed in the 10 years of war in Afghanistan. (One Douglas County native was killed in action in Iraq).
"There's a sadness in this community, I believe. There's grief," said the Rev. Kevin Wilson, one of the pastors at Harper's church, Ephesus Baptist Church in Douglas County
