I adore Oscar. I have known of Wilde for a long time and been familiar with some of his work, but it was Mr. Fry that introduced me to Oscar Wilde. I cannot thank Stephen enough for introducing me to such a genius. I also love and admire Stephen Fry. Meeting him was one of the highlights of my life.

@shogunutralisk I am not of course defending this inhuman view. Just saying that it is, historically, very widespread. That we have finally become more generally accepting of it in our culture is probably to a large extent due to the "legitimisation of romantic love" which started in the 12th century. That made (some) people see that love between two people is so vastly more important than which genders they are.

@shogunutralisk No, it is not historically correct to blame the monotheistic religions alone for condemnation of homosexuality. For instance the vikings also were very scornful about it and had strict laws against it. I can't remember whether it was death penalty, but they were quite up in arms about it certainly. It was considered a great shame. You find something similar in other ancient cultures. The Pagan Romans also thought it was unworthy of a proper Roman to follow the 'Greek custom'.
