The 1992 Hooters 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway was one of the most important and intriguing races in NASCAR history. Six drivers entered the race with a mathematical shot at the season championship, with Alan Kulwicki ultimately edging Bill Elliott for the title by just 10 points. Davey Allison, who arrived at AMS as the points leader, saw his title hopes dashed in a late wreck. The race also was the last for seven-time champion Richard Petty, and marked the Sprint Cup Series debut of future champion Jeff Gordon.
