  • well I agree Domingo played the role great, as far as the artistic interpretation is concerned, he WAS an awesome Calàf... but vocally he just can't compete with the rest of them on this aria. and if we are just talking about singing, well, everyone can see how I ranked him in the previous comments.

considering that his is the only performance here which was live in an opera house, he DID cover the orchestra rather well on the high B however...

  • @gonzalordm ITS nice that you can enjoy him as you do. But I feel that Mario Del Monaco does surpass him in Otello,Canio.Samson,&Don Jose. Liking voices is subjective from listener to listener and i guess thats how fans are created for different singers. The important thing is that we both have different artists that we can enjoy and im sure you or anyone else could find faults with MDM Corelli & Destefano whom are my 3 favorites, as I found with Domingo. Enjoy

  • @sugarbist Yes, he sung it as written, without High C in performancees in ROH in 1989. It was not a popular decission but there no much problem with it (and he is short of fiato in the recording that exists). For me he is unsurpassed as Otello, Canio, Samson, Loris, Don José, to name a few. His vocalitty is very interesting, something as a lyryc-dramatic (a diferent category), has so many virtues...

  • @gonzalordm Continued Domingo also has a reputation for transposing full tones. Half tones are acceptable in certain arias.I have heard him sing an entire Di Quella Pira without a high C. on you tube.He also has sung over 130 different operas to his credit. However i dont believe he has a signature role.Meaning an opera that he does better than anyone else. However its good that you think hes no. 1 along with many other fansand you are able to enjoy his artistry.

  • @gonzalordm I had tried to enjoy PD for many years because of his nice quality of voice but it hasnt worked. I feel that the spinto operas are too big for his voice&he does very little diminuendo& mezza voce, i find his phrasing is not consistent in the heavier roles and he sings everthing in fortissimo.I feel that he should be able to do the things he omits with his lyric spinto voice.I would rather listen to Del Monaco, Corelli. Destefano, Lauri Volpi, Barioni ,Campagnano,Cortis to name a few

  • @sugarbist No, he did not lowered the entire opera never, not even parts of it. Last time he performed was in 1988. You have to see his repertoire and see the dificulty of the operas he sung, Chenier, Ballo, Otello, Turandot, Tosca, Vespri, Hoffmann. All of them with high tessitura. He was very audible (so rich sound, full) at the MET when I saw his pagliacci in 1999. I have heard him many roles, Otello, Canio, Samson, Fedora, Idomeneo, valkure, Parsifal, etc. He is No. 1.

  • @gonzalordm If he is , he must have lowered the entire opera a half a tone which is not uncommon for him. His voice has a nice quality but simply cannot sustain this tessitura.Im guessing you have not heard him live as i did. He was inaudible in Pagiacci when i heard him about 15 years ago and has a history of lowering arias a half tone or full tones. Not a very good example of a world class tenor . Aound 1990 he was campaigning to lower the universal pitch. However Enjoy

  • For this aria:

    Daniele Barioni

    Georges Thill

    Jussi Bjorling

    Pavarotti

    Antonio Cortis
