Site selection for your compression test is the first and foremost safety consideration. A compression test will not do you any good if an avalanche strikes you from above. next time choose a safe location where the consequences of an avalanche are manageable. That being said do not set up for a test or lunch in an avalanche path!

I understand how hard it is to stay home when a partner is not available, however when using the back country in winter time, a partner is not an option, it's a requirement. I'm not typically a preacher, buy life is precious.............. and the line is thin in the high country.

Funny, a guy "teaching" about avalanche safety and he is up there alone! Rule #1... never ride alone.

I'm not teaching. I'm a novice. I post my compression tests so my peers (like you, perhaps) can critique them and so I can keep my skills sharp. Exploring the backcountry with skilled partners who are fit is definitely safer than going solo. Towing around friends just to avoid going out alone is less safe.
