Kermit certainly did a great job of explaining the word "ROUND" with the two talking balls.

Interesting things about this early version of Kermit: his skin has a brownish tint, he's got a potbelly, and he looks like he has a lazy eye.

Yes, that was why the black background was used. This was the days before blue screen and computer animation and stuff.

Frank Oz could only do a few voices which is why the ball sounds like Bert (Fozzie's voice was also similar) and Yoda sounds like Grover.

Well, the dumb basket ball knows that Kermit is no ordinary frog.. That he's a green felt puppet. But of course neither the pink felt ball and the basketball are ordinary. And that felt balls can't bounce.
