THey could improve their process and reduce illness by using some barrells and cooking the wood inside the barrels in pits covered with straw or in larger cooking kilns fired by some of the charcoal itself. Once the kiln was lit, it could actually burn the gases emitted from the barrell. That way it would produce very little smoke.
