This is the first (of seven or eight) of a series of videos that I'll be releasing in which I take you through every major scene, and a few minor scenes, in "Ganbare Goemon 3." This installment contains the following ("Scenes" will usually be separated by a significant change in topic/place/time, especially topic.):

Scene 1: You're Lost Little Girl
Scene 2: Mimicry Transformation Ninjutsu!
Scene 3: Sasuke (NOTE: The biggest "Japan-only" joke is in this scene...see below.)
Scene 4: Sasuke?!
Scene 5: Run, Goemon, Run!
Scene 6: The Wise Man's Vacation Home (NOTE: Even though I chose not to show my characters actually running away from Bismaru Elegant, you can still tell I didn't do too well.)

Remember when I said that the archaic language proved to be problematic in the GG3 ending? Well, this time it was so bad, it almost convinced me to abandon this particular project. On top of that, there's the issue with the dialects. Ebisumaru is always tough to translate because of his Kansai-ben dialect, but apparently Goemon tends to talk like a gangster! The combination of all those things makes it surprising that kids play this game and understand it.

I actually broke a few of my own rules with this video. I was shocked to learn that I didn't give myself nearly as much time to put the subtitles in as I did in the GG3 ending. As a result, I was forced to put two lines of translated dialogue at some parts; in addition, some parts ended up overlapping so that one person's words are in Japanese and someone else's is in English, or there's an English subtitle when nobody is talking in Japanese. It's still too early for me to say whether this will be a problem in the future videos.

A few jokes got lost in the translation. The most obvious one is in Scene 3, when Ebisumaru says "I can use the c-conch shell?". The word for "conch shell" is similar to the word for "bragging" in Japanese, and I have a pretty good feeling I put in the wrong word (especially judging by what Goemon says next). But it wouldn't make any sense to an English audience if I said "bragging" instead of "conch shell", so I changed it slightly to make it work. I'd just like to remind everybody that you should NOT be using these videos to learn any Japanese.

I'm not planning to make an updated version of this video (in fact, I'll be throwing away all the files in a few days), so I'll mention any reasonable suggestions people make here in the video description. If you've got any ideas to help me improve the translation, I'd love to hear from you!

EDIT: Okay, there must be something wrong with my I-Movie program; I'm getting fed-up with this skipping problem. Add that to the fact that some subtitles are on there for just over a second, and this becomes extremely difficult to read. I would recommend pausing everytime a new English subtitle comes up. Also, I realized that putting the dialogue in the comments caused a lot of clutter, so I've moved it from the comments to my new Goemon blog, which you can find here: http://goemoninenglish.blogspot.com/

  • Too bad the quality of this video isn't fluid. But it's better than nothing, I guess.

  • @hisquiskw666 I understand and agree completely. I really do apologize for the inconvenience, but I don't have the video files or anything anymore (they took up a TON of memory) so I can't redo them.

  • The music really reminds me of Naruto

  • @GenyaArikado You mean at the beginning? It's from one of the N64 games. Or, rather, it's an expanded version of a song from one of the N64 games.

  • thanks so much for the english translations! i dont have a clue at all when i played this game when i was a kid, so i got stuck later on cuz i cant figure out what i should do!

  • How easy is it to just play the game if I can't read Japanese? Is it enough to be able to check these cutscene videos for reference?

  • @XxKyKiske2007xX hehe, so you don't like Naruto. But i see you like Code Geass. I haven't finished that anime yet. It's pretty complex but really good !
