Ape Escape Crabby Beach Time Attack 00'23"90 [WR]

This beginning is slower than hooping around the bend in terms of catching the first monkey, but makes the high-placed big chip much easier to get. All in all it is a few seconds better. I was also able to tighten up the middle part with the chip collecting. As for the ending, credit goes to Paine. Used his method of UFO monkey → big chips → last two. That's a lot better than how I did it in my previous Crabby Beach run.

As usual I'll include my take on how far I believe the record can actually go, as by TAS standards. About 15 seconds for this stage I think. The crabs, though annoying as all hell (I'll get to that next paragraph), can be quickly stepped on then killed by the initiation of the hoop, and thrown directly in front of you for an extra 2 chips at every applicable instance (by that I mean, it is not applicable to stray too far off course to kill a crab when it only saves 2 measly seconds). Much too hard a tactic for a real-time run though.

So about the crabs...Well, just watch the end bit. Then realize that all of the clips were taken from a mere 21 minutes of capturing!! This record surprisingly took several hours till I finally had a score I wanted (threw out many 25"XXs), so if I really wanted to I could've had about 50 instances of crab interference attached to the end here, but that seemed pretty redundant. Between lag and crabs, this level was BEYOND annoying.

My total combined time / Total High Score (THS) is currently 03'47"72 for the 19 time attacks.

I remember this particular Ultra Time was hell for me to get, I ended up barely getting it (but then again I had a completely different route that was pretty bad).

Nice job on this one, hope to see an improvement with the crabs included (maybe killing them with the magic punch abusing the cooldown prevention by switching gadgets and not sky flying the final gap?) at some point.

I think the magic punch, like other attacks, kills crabs in two hits - the first of course knocking them on their back. I could be wrong. At any rate, I won't be trying to add crabs. It just would be a nightmare to get the perfect run without TAS.

The gap though, definitely, should not have included skyflying. I'm happy to see there's at least one person out there who notices such small yet significant changes in optimization. Damn monkey wasn't on the button :/

Thanks! It's really a great game--surprised you've never played it! Ape Escape was very successful and popular at the time of its release for PS1 (1999) and of course some years after. So many Let's Plays of it on youtube too x)

That monkey unfortunately has a flying saucer/UFO that he gets inside of. Even with that mass of chips there, it's very hard to get the last three monkeys within the 20 seconds.

I hope for that too haha. This game was very popular for its time, but the time attacks just never caught on. Most people quit playing it after catching Specter in the final battle.
