"If you build them, they will rent." Monolithic's President David B. South has been saying that since mid-2000 when the company first began planning the building of an experimental complex of dome rentals. Monolithic's goal was to provide clean, secure, and -- most importantly -- affordable housing for low-income individuals. The idea or goal came about because of media reports and information on the Web about growing, nationwide shortage of affordable housing. People particularly affected, in both rural and urban areas, included single men and women with minimum wage jobs, single mothers, senior citizens with inadequate or no pensions, and victims of work layoffs or company downsizing.

  • Is it also possible to paint them in other colors or have grass greening on them?

  • Why no trees? The domes are depressingly furnished and most are plopped onto scrubby, barren, depleted-looking land. The overall feeling I get is "impoverishment." Can you not plant some trees and bushes near these structures? A patch of flowers, a few beach grass or even succulents, like cactus? If I had to stay in one of these "extended stay motels" my heart would sink at the sight of it. Yes, it's better than a cardboard box under a freeway overpass, but why so dispiriting?

  • I like domes, but you should do more homework when it comes to financial issues. Use the acronym ROI to also represent Rate Of Inflation. (Where are you finding a 5% CD these days anyway?)

Inflation > Intrest rate = Loss

  • Very informative video! I have had thoughts of something like that. in these economic times people need something that is affordable.

  • You own a bank who are your customers? People are on a merry go round in life in this merry go round you are making payments all your life. First for a car then a home another car another home. You make a car last a lifetime a home last multiple lifetimes you loose customer base. Look at the disaster industry running to every wind or quake truck loads of ice food water we solve those problems less$spent, wind blows you need no roof less $ house survives less $ industry counts on failure.

  • According to Sam Walton's Biography (Wal-Mart), he was turned down by 281 banks before he was bankrolled by number 282 -- keep looking. There are other institutions that lend besides banks.

  • Banks are assholes, narrow minded and historically to conservative to look at the big picture, resulting in our current economic state. Ironically, they don't mind taking loans from us, the taxpayers.
