Bernstein The most great conductor of the XX century used to do that in many concerts. So it is not the first time. Furtheremore usually Bachs and Mozarts music didnt have any conductor at their times,so it was usual the pianist or Clavenist or even the first violinist used to be the conductor. Mozart did it. Bernstein is trying to teach us such as old past. I recomend also "Rapsody in blue" and "Concert in G " of Ravel played and conducted by himself extraordinariously.

It is never easy to lead an orchestra while playing the solo part. In such cases I prefer to follow the overall impression, which in Mr. Bernstein´s case is just sublime.

Opinions. We are all intitled to one. And I hold to mine. I don't see the words "not bad". He was a wonderful conductor but as pianist being nonetheless "GREAT" I do prefer others on Mozart. Gulda for instance. On youtube there's this same concert by Dezsö Ránki and he is an absolute virtuoso.
