Richie was plugged in, but usually very low in the mix, BUT
In the 94 tour Richie DID play with his amp on, quite loud aswell..
Just check out Glastonbury.

Plus this was the first time they played as a 3-piece without Richey so I'm sure their minds were elsewhere for most of the show since they weren't playing as a full group (even if Richey usually didn't play with his amp on he was still a member of the band and part of their show.)

Of course, Nicky himself is aware of that and often publicly criticizes his own bass playing skills.
I think though as far as this performance goes they really didn't care about this song as much compared to the songs from The Holy Bible. In fact at this point they probably hated most if not all of their Gold Against The Soul songs. So I don't think either James or Nicky cared if they messed up when playing this song.

he's very lucky playing in a band like this, for such bad tone, timing, dynamics, god it's awful. is it lack of concentration or lack of skill? i'm afraid it's both.

Poor Nicky messed up a bit there didn't he? But he definitely made up for it beautifully!
