In fact it lasted 2,000 years, not 1,000 because what now is called Byzantine Empire by then was also called Roman Empire and both Arabs and Turks called them Romans during the Crusades. Its capital was Constantinopla...but it was still the Roman Empire, and for decades part of Italy, including Rome, was also part of it.

Actually, Rome was remarkably long lived. A bit shy of 1000 years, all up from when it started taking over the Italian Peninsular to the final sacking in 475. The question most historians ask is not why did it fall? but rather how did it last longer than any other in history?
