This cringey self-promoting vid with Dave name-dropping Rogers is not reflective of their more heartfelt and authentic style of writing. I have not read the book they mention here but have read their book 'Person Centred Therapy today' - which is a really helpful and lucid presentation with a great section on the problems of 'profesionalisation'. Perfect for diploma level. They should stick with prose and avoid the vid camera which really doesn't do them any favours! Too much agenda!
ironjohn: If you think CBT is all about power, control and manipulation I'm concerned you've been to a dodgy practitioner! All the research suggests it doesn't matter what model you are using, it purely depends on WHO the therapist is, and the quality of the relationship. I have always had a soft spot for client-centered counselling, it tends to appeal to more authentic and courageous people I think.
Bible, Hmm. Maybe this is all envy and resentment on my part, but this book ad seemed to me to ooze a kind of indirect self-satisfaction and smugness. These were the blokes that dreamed up the line 'the world is full of helpers whose activity is a desparate strategy to avoid confronting themselves' and for that I am in their debt, but this double act?
Mearns and Thorne ! This is the first time that I have seen David Mearns, I often woundered what he looked looked like !
Person centred Counselling is a truly human activitity, and I admire them both for standing against the general trend which is all about poer controle and manilulation, ( ie CBT ! ) John T
Thank you for revising the bible ! I am a tutor on a so-called "integrative counselling course" (which basically picks and chooses between 3 'identified methods of counselling" `and pretends that this is a model in itself ) - and I thoroughly endorse the idea that Carl Rogers would have welcomed this honesty and new interpretatation of his model. Your sage book is indeed a bible and I have repeatedly recommended it toi the students.
"We wanted to stress the sheer HUMANITY of this activity we call counselling"... I love it. LOVE IT! No wait... I UPR it.
