My students made this in the courtyard of our school to blow off steam during testing week. Growing three sisters (corn, beans and squash) as well as some traditional Meso-American crops such as tomato, tomatillo, chili peppers. Down the hill is a worm composter which they are filling with lunch refuse.
They brought in soil from home and some bags of fireplaces ashes. I pilfered some wood chips from a town works department dump and we mixed it all together to simulate swidden agriculture, slash and burn. Groundhog is starting to nibble, so a non-earthy fence will soon abound and surround to slow him/them down a little more.
They planted saved and salvaged seeds into cups in the classroom to make it easy to transplant. The bigger pumpkin is from an old jack-o-lantern seed that a squirrel must have buried in my yard and forgotten about until it sprouted last week.
