Can you get any closer to these rays? Yes! They actually bump into you in their quest for the plankton drawn to the lights your guides are shining up from the ocean floor thirty feet below you and down from their positions floating around you. This excursion is just for snorkelers. Off the Big Island of Hawaii, the Fair Winds’ “Hula Kai” takes you out about five minutes from their dock next to the Sheraton. They float a ladder-like device that you hang on, while they shine the lights. On March 8, 2009, we had about 8 mantas actively circling for plankton. What a blast! The diver you see in the video works for Fair Winds; his job is to capture video of you and the mantas and any other creatures of the night reef. This guy’s Bryce; he said two years ago he was a stock broker, but that a snorkel with the mantas changed his life. Buy the video he’s hawking; it contains footage he and another guy have shot all around the island. It’s great stuff, especially where he’s shown letting shrimp crawl around his open mouth to “clean” it, just as they do with moray eels. I guess it’s a groovy kind of love. Many thanks to the Mindbenders for their sweet and heartfelt version of this ode to teenage love.
