Decided very late we'd join this contest. Shot this over the weekend using a little Canon HFS20 camcorder. For some unknown reason after a really crappy Monday Mar. 21st, I (the director) all of a sudden felt compelled to enter this, and wrote an idea late that night based off a title I had thought up long ago (well before I had ever heard of Kick Ass). Somehow we managed to pull it all (somewhat) together despite not having any locations, actors or crew set until Thursday night. We had a lot of luck for this to get to the finish line, and most of that is because of the awesome people that came and helped us out last minute.

We really lucked out with our cast. We cast it on the fly, basically giving roles to whoever responded to our craigslist ad which included casting some on the same day we shot. As for our lead. I had found his reel online. He looked the age range of the character I was looking for, so I sent him a cold email with my pitch. He went for it and wow I'm humbled by what he brought to the character (thanks Steve). But everyone was so cool and fun to work with. Regardless if this does well or not, we had a blast shooting it and made new friends and found great actors/people to work with in the future. Thanks to Everyone Involved in it, you were all amazing and great to have on "set" (can't really call what we had going on a set). Hope in the end we did you some justice. And thanks for putting on the contest (Hobo Team and Magnet Releasing(?) - you helped me get out of a slump and do the one thing I truly love!) - regards, Scott Staven.

**If you watch the trailer and read this: Hypothetical Question: Who do you see being the perfect actor to play Karl (the 'hero') if this was a real movie? Answer in the comments below, thanks! (ex. we like the idea of Ed Harris as Karl).***

The Logline:

"Fueled by cocaine, liquor, and the knowledge that the cancer inside him is incurable, Karl Theodore decides to put his last efforts on earth into finding the men responsible for his son's death... dressed as a two-bit superhero."

The Concept:

Wanted to try and put an exploitative storyline into a more theatrical trailer, kind of create a hybrid of the two. Also wanted to create a storyline and have the trailer seem like it could be for an actual movie. Not sure if we quite reached that, but regardless it was good to get out and shoot even if it meant going 100% run and gun finding locations and actors to help as we shot.

The Team:

Steve Weller: Karl Theodore
Spike Stonehenge: Darren.
Phillip Dundas-Ure: Det. Oswalt.
Darren Andrichuk: Det. MacLean.
Josh Hallem: The Talker.
Vanessa Buffalo: Vanessa Vixen.
Alana LaMalice: Autumn Raine.
Sotos Petrides Masked Thug • Gurney Pusher • Tunnel Attacker from front.
Rami Farhan: Masked Thug • Gurney Pusher • Tunnel Attacker from back.
Vince Ficetola: The Hitman • Crazy Axe Dude
Pamela Palsat: The Ex.
Ian Gustafson: The Dealer.
Ric S. Lee: Nunchuk Neil.
Steven Summerall: Homeless Boxer.

Other than Ian Gustafson and I there was no crew. but the actors all lent a hand when needed, so they were really the glue that kept this together.

Special Thanks to:

Thomas FX http://www.thomasfx.com
and
Boolala Costumes http://www.boolalacostumes.com
and Red Giant Software for helping me fix my Misfire filter today so I could give the film a bit of a Grindhouse Look. http://www.redgiantsoftware.com
and Philip Dundas-Ure - Congrats on the First Acting Gig, you were great. We hope you get to break many a legs from now on!

We licensed our music through Audio Jungle on Theme Forest (pretty cool site). It has the dubious name of "Epic Metal Trailer Music 17" - thought it would work well for the tale we wanted to tell.

  • Wow!! This is a tie-up with Van Gore for sure in my book. There are so many Canadian movies made each year simply because they can, yours would be quite a refreshment, just like Hobo was. The only criticism I have is the title card which looks a little straight-to-DVD. Besides that, I would really like to see this made. You have something in your portfolio to show your talent as a filmmaker and editor.

  • @TheOmasse Thanks for the kind words. Super happy you and the others that have made comments enjoyed it. It's a nice reward to have people enjoy something that took a lot of effort to pull off even being a fun spur of the moment project. We'll also agree title cards are not a strong point for us. We need to meet some After Effects wiz to do some for us for future projects. **Which hopefully will be fairly soon as we're working on a Hitman Web Series to be shot later this summer.

  • This is highly underrated. Looks like it took a lot of work. I especially love the music here, it's quite grabbing. Make-up was flawless too. If I could give multiple thumbs up, I most certainly would.

  • @MadeToBeGray Thanks a lot for the comment. For any aspiring filmmaker it can be a lonely road, even just trying to get people to take a few minutes to watch your work can be hard to accomplish. Hearing stuff like you posted is fuel to keep the engine running in the pursuit of becoming an accomplished filmmaker. Thanks!
