a. Each lifter is given 3 chances per event to make the highest possible lift. In the Squat, Debuque opened with 600 pounds in the first round which was the highest successful lift in that round. Behind him was 2nd placer Pavel Chertkov (595 pounds) of Russia. Carlos Guapulema of Ecuador failed at 600 pounds. Debuque was running 1st after the first round. Other lifters from Japan, Ecuador, Kazahkstan & Canada were far behind and were not considered a threat anymore in the next 2 rounds of attempts.
b. In the 2nd round, Chertkov successfully lifted 617 pounds to overtake Debuque. Guapulema also successfully lifted 617 pounds to also surpass Debuque who got pushed down to 3rd place in rank.
c. Debuque squatted 628 pounds easily to regain the top rank at the end of the 2nd round.
d. Chertkov attempted 639 pounds in the 3rd round to try to grab the lead but failed to make the lift successfully. However, Guapulema came back in the 3rd round to lift 650 pounds, again making Debuque lose the lead.
e. On his 3rd attempt, Debuque requested for 650, the same as Guapulema's successful 3rd attempt. Since Debuque was lighter, tying Guapulema would be enough to regain the lead & win the gold,
f. Debuque had officially squatted 672 pounds in local PH competition. While there was reasonable confidence he could do at least 672, the coach decided to play it safe and just go for 650 for a higher percentage attempt. Debuque smoked it to win the gold medal in the Squat.
g. Chertkov came back to win the Bench Press (402 pounds) and Deadlift (573 pounds) to Total 1,592 pounds. Debuque lifted 352 in the Bench Press & 518 in the Deadlift to total 1,521 -- good enough to win the Silver in the Total behind Chertkov.
h. Final result in the Squat: Gold medal went to the lighter Debuque (650 pounds), Silver medal to the heavier Guapulema (650 pounds), Bronze medal to Chertkov (617 pounds).
i. Final result in the Total: Gold medal went to Chertkov (1,592 pounds), Silver medal to the Debuque (1,521 pounds), Bronze medal to Markov Stanislav (1,488 pounds) who caught up quietly in the Bench Press & Deadlift.
