I remember my mother playing this in the living room going as far back as when I was a very small child. For me, it is like a lullaby.

Young pianists, listen to this playing over, over and over and then listen to yourself. Count the various shading of colors within his notes and breaths within, then count yours. Now try and imitate these variations in all your playing, let the music speak! I just don't have words for the shear beauty starting at 3:50, love beyond description at least for me. Thanks Rach for all your slow high-finger practice bringing us all this delicate playing!! Thank you truecrypt.
This is absolutely magical. It is fascinating to hear Rachmaninoff playing this concerto. I don't know why this concerto isn't played as often as the 2nd and 3rd because it is so beautiful. I have played this myself with orchestra in the UK in 1971 and am preparing to play it again later this year here in the USA. It was one of the musical highlights of my life. It is a pity there is no film of Rachmaninoff playing. Thanks so much for posting this!

Thanks for posting this! I can only think of Byron Janis's interpretation coming close to this.
