78 Harley Davidson Sportster
This has been my bike for the past 8 years and I recently converted it to a hard tail two years ago and finished it the way I had wanted for many years.
78 frame with a welded on hard tail that extended and lowered the rear 4 inches in both directions.
All unnecessary tabs and brackets removed and frame was then powder coated.
Engine -78 1000cc engine bored .060 over new pistons and rings
Cylinders bored and powder coated
-New bottom end bearings, mainshaft and pinion shaft. I used flywheels from a 58 and the rotating assembly was balanced. -All machine work performed by Coleman Brothers in Linthicum, MD. Mr. Coleman has been in business since the 50s. Actually he does all the machine work for the local Harley dealers as they outsource the work.
Heads powder coated, new valve guides and valves, spring and retainers. Ports in the head were slightly ported and polished for better flow. Combustion chamber area was not. --
New bushings in the rocker arms. Oil gauge installed on the front rocker. --
Cams from a 75 XLCH and all new bushings in the cam cover which was correctly machined by machine shop. --
S&S carb with Thunderjet kit for midrange performance correction. --
Pingle petcock and filter --
Fish tail pipe without baffle --
Transmission completely rebuilt with correct free play and new mainshaft bushing, rollers and shims --
New clutches --
Forward controls --
No turn signals -78 Sportster front-end with dual disc. --
New dual front spotlights -40's era inspired front fender --
Oil cooler --
All wiring rerun and soldered at every connection. --
Oil tank, battery holder and all other brackets powder coated./ -
New Paughco dual cap sporty tank, Kreme lined. --
Updated 2inch Speedo and Tach --
I retained the rear brakes from the 78 and just flipped the brake arm on the drum. It is cable actuated --
Rear fender is repo of a 40's WL. --
The black and white paint scheme was professionally done to the tank and both fenders and is in excellent shape with nice black pin stripping around the edges. The tank logo originally used on 40-50's era HDs was recreated by a graphics company and applied to the tank and clear coated with the tank. --
This bike starts on the first or second click of the starter. Kick-start is just too hard for me and yes I have a Sportster knee now. Engine does not leak oil and the oil pressure at the head is great.
