1988. Assateague Island's ponies are often referred to as wild ponies. The correct term is feral, as the ponies are descendants of domesticated horses that adapted to life in the wild.
These two are feeding peacefully. Do NOT attempt to feed them as some can be quite aggressive.
Assateague is a barrier island off of Maryland's Eastern Shore.

They are beautiful! I went there a while ago, in 2000, and only got to see them from far away. Lately, for some reason, I've been having dreams about them.

i'm goign there in a couple of days and hopefully i can se one up close! last year we saw em from a very very far away distance and i cried the whole way home :(

The horses on the MD portion of Assateague are not sold. There is nothing wrong with the brown horses - they are called sorrels.
