I appreciate this video, because there's still a misconception that the GI Bill covers our education costs. After almost loosing my chance for a University education because of the time I spent in the service, getting out and seeing exactly how little it helps is almost a slap in the face.
I'm not a democrat, or a republican, or an independent... I don't line with any party... But God bless Mr Webb for pushing this bill.
A lot of people don't understand how the GI Bill is pushed at us. "College is paid for!"... right. The only costs I have to cover myself are books, tuition, and housing. Books for atleast 4 classes in the spring, summer, and fall. At 100+ per book... 700 a month for housing... plus medical, auto, etc etc... you can see how much the current GI Bill falls short after being told that college will be paid for.
After adding up everything it'll cost me to get a bachelor's degree, it will cost me upwards of 70,000 in student loans with the current GI Bill. The new GI Bill will REALLY help me out by almost halving that. The college I'm looking at requires Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters to be considered a full time student. So, right there that 1,100 a month for 9 months for 4 years, used up... gone. Everything else minus what that will cover (food, supplies) will come out of my pocket.
I'm currently working on getting everything ready to start college next year... have to hammer out a few courses at a local community college first since my time in the service kinda counted against me because it made it to where I was out of school for too long for most universities to consider me. So I have to get my GPA up first... ANYWHO... too much text, next comment.
My only question is when is this bill expected to be law?
