Larghetto (2/2)
This movement is so beautiful, full of many beautiful melodies. I'd love to hear you opinion about the symphony. As it is my favourite piece, I'd be really interested to find out what other people think of it.
As well as paying tribute to Elgar in these videos, we also are paying respect to the fantastic conductor, Sir Edward Downes who died recently. He commited assisted suicide with his wife, Lady Joan Downes, in Switzerland, 10th July 2009. Rest in Peace.
It is a fantastic performance!

@RWT683 There's no harm in wondering about what may have influenced Elgar in
writing this movement. I've never thought of a battlefield, however I do sometimes think of a camel having sex with a giraffe in the antarctic.

@lewars1912 Personally I think it amiss to try to find political messages or "paintings" of actual feelings, objects or events in classical music, unless the composer specifically stated what the music is supposed to represent (like with Beethoven's 6th).
For some reason most people insist on doing this as they seem unable to accept that music can just exist for its own sake.
As I was listening to this I was thinking of a battlefield, but of course really the music just represents itself.

Thank you for uploading this lovely elegiac movement. I sometimes wonder
if at some psychic level Elgar sensed the
coming 1st world war and his world changing.
