Recently (2011) saw a big winning run by a trainer who yanked his horse's mouth pre-ride to get the horse to remember to keep the head low or ELSE. Others are breeding for a very low head set. Is this the new style? It is ugly to have such a low head set & know a horse is afraid, IMO.
I like the heads on these horses in this video that aren't unnaturally below the withers. They just use their head down in the slide stop as natural balance for a moment. This seems like what reining should be.
