The Johnny Mathis Hit Parade

Dedicated to finding the long forgotten Johnny Mathis gems of his treasure-trove of vintage hits from the 50's and 60's.

I span the globe seeking, borrowing, yea, even buying every Mathis album out there, patiently listening to each and every song, once, twice, sometimes more, cherry-picking the cream-of-the-crop hits—so you don't have to.

Today's selection is a difficult song to sing because it requires such a wide vocal range. Some singers sing loud in place of high. But Johnny sails up the scale singing every note the way it was originally intended. A quintessential Johnny Mathis tune, "My One And Only Love."

**By the way, I should mention: Johnny is singing before a large audience in this picture. I had to black out the background because of writing on the photo. So picture him sitting in concert in front of a massive audience of teenagers (mostly female).

  • This is not to minimize MJ who deservedly had such fan impact in huge numbers. But I think JM equals MJ, at the very least, in bringing listeners to that level of song pleasure and resonance that multitudes so appreciate.

You are right about JM's vocal range. Might I add style, say from WARM to BEGIN THE BEGUINE.

Much thanks for posting this present piece.

  • Michael Jackson is a very talented performer, especially in dance. But Johnny Mathis has the gifted voice that I don't know anyone in the world who could match. Jackson's voice isn't even in the ballpark of Johnny Mathis IMO.

  • I have been looking for this song for a long time. Has it been released on CD yet? Another song I like is "All The Time".

  • I don't know if it's been released to CD. "All The Time" is on this site, too.

  • This is JM at his best, grew up listening to my Dads favorite singer and caught the bug, took him to his 50th Anniversary Concert tour at Wembley UK. One of my favorite albums is Heavenly! Anybody else agree?

  • I'm pretty partial to The Global Masters myself.

  • Listening to this young Mathis sing I am almost breathless. AND hearing how his voice has evolved and developed over the years, through other recordings, I am astounded. His voice was described recently by a music critic as being "pure and sweet" (at the age of 74!!). I heard it on the occasion described, and it IS! STILL! But IMHO even richer, more resonant, slightly deeper, bringing out beautiful, manly nuances. What a gift, and how wonderfully he takes care of it!

  • This song is from the album Warm or Swing Softly. I believe the albums were originally released in the late 1950's. Johnny was still new to people then. Listen to the his rich voice, the way he hits those high notes and the romantic way he caresses the lyrics, it's no wonder he became one of the most popular singers of romantic ballads. I've loved his voice since I first heard him in 1959, this is a great song for Johnny and it brings back some great memories. Thanks for the upload.

  • Pure Mathis magic. My favorite male singer. I've seen him live and met him once, years ago and asked for his autograph,

  • Everyone who has been in love knows what this is all about.....Beautifully done, Johnny.......

  • I love it that Mr.Mathis was a singer and just a singer, he is the best at what he does ,he interpets love like no other, softly, gently, sweetly, I have always listened to his music, but just started seeing the videos ,he is a little shy and awkard in his presentation ,but that's what makes him Johnny Mathis and no one not even Nat can touch him ,sensitive and extremely attractive ,I love it that he is protective of his private life, that just ads to the mistique,

  • i always have loved him I wonder were those marvelous voices are and how come we don't have them anymore love you forever

  • The English Lyrics are by Robert Mellin. Too often we idolize the performer and forget the author. Robert Mellin wrote many songs that will live far beyond the performers who sang them but few will remember his name.

Guy Wood wrote the music behind the lyrics. The song would not resonate without singer, composer, and lyricist.

  • Sweetest, youthfu, innocent, bright, perfect memories hearing this every time.

  • I hadn't heard this gem in such a long time so I went searching for it in my old LP's. Found it on his 'Warm' LP with Percy Faith orchestra. So excuse me while I slip it onto my ancient turntable and spend the next 45 minutes in heaven.

  • Utterly soft and loving: his songs are like love sounding. And sooooo wonderful to dance to.......omg. Dancing then is like poetry in motion. Few things honor a woman as much as that,,,,,,,,and Johnny's music is married to that joy.

  • Precious Memory material in my life....I barely can stand to listen to it, but yet I am drawn to it like a moth to a deadly flame! Much to my heart's painful knowledge...after I start the reverie. Then it is too late...

  • I've played this song in various stages of my life as I was falling in love. It's so perfectly romantic. What a voice, what fantasies. Love this man's voice.
