@jimboturner the whole "surfing etiquette" thing works a lot better if the waves are bigger and the spot is more dangerous than some beginner spot like Cardiff (being where Joel Tudor is from).  It's when the waves are big that you have to worry about beginners getting in peoples' way and making the lineup dangerous and such.

I have a question.. Lets say you are right where the wave is going to break and it is coming across the horizon... A long boarder paddles to me from about 10-20 yards away. Who has the right of way? I mean, he did get up about a second before me but I clearly had been in the position to catch the wave. I dropped in and grabbed my rail to get down the wave before him but he beat me and ended up parallel next to me. White water ended up getting me. I got yelled at. What do you think?

I used to surf and live by WindNSea Beach in Lajolla and saw this gangly 14 yr old kid out surfing all the time. I'd like to say that he learned a few things from watching me surf :)
