This song is owned by the Fab Four and I have only borrowed it ;-)
(Sir Paulus said I could)

In 1963 I was just 5 years old, but the streets in these photos by John Eddleston are etched into my mind for eternity. Some are still with us, but many are long gone. All credit to John Eddleston for having the foresight to record how Blackburn town centre looked before the demolition teams moved in a month or two later. I was born in the town centre in 1958 and lived there until 1967, so grew up among the rubble and the building sites, through destruction and construction. I suppose it's debateable whether the redevelopment was for better or for worse, we all have our own opinions. Buildings are temporary.

The Beatles however, are forever. This song surely ranks among their top 5.

  • I loved watching this - rumour has it that John Eddleston also took a photograph of JW Rayton's smithy, hopefully also showing his son Fred, in 1963. JW was my Great Grandpa, Fred was my Grandpa, Jim was my Great Uncle and 'Owd Ted' who would hopefully be on the photo too, is like a little legend in my family! Do you by any chance have a copy and (cheeky I know!) if you do, would you consider putting into one of your compilations? I'd so love to see it. Thanks & best wishes Debbie

  • @debilou27 Sorry Debbie, the only photos I'm aware of of John Eddleston's are the ones published in the two books 'Blackburn 1963 A Proud Town' (which is where these images are from). I can believe what you're saying though, as it's highly unlikely he just took these series of photos. All I can suggest is that you try and make contact with a member of the family. How you would track them down though I wouldn't know. The two ''1963'' books don't have any contact details. Good Luck !

  • Fantastic vids, it makes you sad what they have done to Lancashire.

  • @Lancashirefolk Thanks a lot. Glad you enjoyed them. I've enjoyed making them. This was my first and I think I tried to cram too many images into a quite short song, but I'm learning ;-)

  • Great Video, many thanks. Lets hope we have enough people willing to risk arrest and being branded a 'terrorist' so that we can have pictures for future generations to enjoy of today's Blackburn.
