BBC Scotland Documentary - Through the winning and losing of an American empire and the impact of the Scottish Enlightenment, Neil Oliver reveals how in the second half of the 18th century Scotland was transformed from a poor northern backwater with a serious image problem into one of the richest nations on Earth. This was the dawn of the modern age when Scotland made its mark on the world by exporting its most valuable commodities - its people and ideas.

  • Ah, OK...now it's mentioned and criticized. At last, but I suppose Neil Oliver has funding issues like anyone else, eh?

  • This episode points out the most overlooked fact of the British Empire- we, the Brits, mainly lived in squalor and poverty, with bad health, poor education and terrible working conditions. With rare exceptions, the ruling class made the money. Nothing improved for the majority until all was thrown into chaos in WWII aftermath. It is time the world stopped hating on us Brits for an Empire that saw most of us live worse than many of our colonies.

  • Does anyone know the music at 4:28? Please anyone?

  • @PopsMcKracken. Your comments are a perfect example of how YouTube's comment section is a breeding ground and refuge for the world's anti-semites

  • Now we know which country had invented the 'house nigger'... oh you naughty Scotland!

  • There's this AMAZING book on slavery called "To Be a Slave," by Julius Lester!

  • "In America, there was real potential to create a civilized & fair society." Too bad, after +200 years, we in America still struggle to do that.

  • what irritates me is that nearly every people on earth has endured slavery. The Germans, the French, the Slavs, not just Africans and where usually european slaves were taken after conquest or warfare, in many cases African slaves were sold by there on people (often chieftains). If all men are supposed to be equal then be equal, forget the bullshit about slavery as the Europeans have. People need to move on and leave slavery in the past not keep it in the present.

  • @goldensassenach i read somewhere that the kkk was founded by old scottish protestant immigrants.

    the scumbags.

  • Great Britain, heart of liberty, constitutional monarchy, hence, democracy.. = the slaver of the backbone of America.. contradiction anyone ? ... then again, when has the world ever lived without it.
