Now I know why a Stradivarius is so valuable! It is quite hard to build a good violin. And furthermore I haven't got a clue on how to actually play it.

Anyway, after seeing that somebody had build a MindStorms guitar I thought that it could be fun to take the concept a little further. So I thought a violin was the natural next step. The way it works is that the ultrasonic distance sensor measures how far away the slider on the "fingerboard" is and this distance is converted to 8 notes. The wheels that the "bow" is turning raises or lowers a little brick in front of a light sensor. This turns the notes on and off.

I soon gave up playing existing songs! Instead I concentrated on making something that was comprehensible as a melody - in other words: I made it up while recording. Then I added the chords using the Yamaha HE-8 organ and Roland JX-8P synthesizer.

  • Good! But where does the bells sound and the cymbal/bass drum come from?

  • @Riskteven - The bass drum is from a slightly filtered Roland Rhythm 77 drum machine. The bells and cymbals is from the Yamaha HE-8 organ.
