Mike and Tony Petrakis are a Greek father and son team who dive for sponges off the coast of Florida. After they are robbed by crooks, Arnold and the Rhys brothers, Mike decides to take his men to the dangerous 12-mile reef to dive for more sponges. Mike suffers a fatal accident when he falls from the reef leaving Tony to carry on the business. But now he has a companion, Gwyneth Rhys. Written by Kelly

When their traditional sea beds no longer produce enough sponges for them to make a decent living, divers Mike Petrakis and his son Tony have to look elsewhere. Others in the close-knit Greek sponge-diving community have started going to the 12 mile reef but Mike will have nothing to do with the area since his other son died there in a diving accident. They try their hands in the Everglades but come up against Thomas Rhys and Arnold Dix who rob them. With few choices left to them, they head to the deadly reef where tragedy awaits them - and for Tony, love in the form of Rhys' daughter Gwyneth.

  • ...and the opening and closing music was also used in several of Allen's 20 minute "demo films" for proposed 1968-'69 series {i.e. "CITY BENEATH THE SEA"}.

  • Originally released in December 1953. Great musical score by Bernard Herrmann; Irwin Allen, who often "borrowed" several of Herrmann's cues from his '50s Fox features for his various TV shows in the '60s, used some of this score for the unaired version of his 1965 "LOST IN SPACE" pilot, "No Place to Hide" {i.e. 35:28-35:48/34:38-35:27, when Maureen Robinson uses the "sonic washer"; 38:35-39:25, whenever Professor Robinson used the "Jet Pack"...right into the series}....

  • that arnold guy is a real dix. I bet he's the kind of guy who would be a german spy in an american barracks during world war II

  • @am2boni Yes, I recognized that from Lost in Space as well !!

  • A great movie...Does anyone know what bar/restaurant that was @028:42 ? Sloppy Joe's maybe??

  • A beautiful score by Berrnard Herrmann! A classic! My favorite part is 38:28, when the music starts and they are at the 12 mile reef. This music was also used in Lost In Space. The speach that Mike gives to Tony is a classic. "YOu go in, you pick all you want. . millons of sponges. . . the first time you go down in deep water, you get scared"!!!! A classic ! Reminds me of Quint in the movie Jaws!!!

  • One of my favorite movies, just makes me sad watching it, but I love it very much.
