sorry, but the film take place in prussia, like the movie says in the beginning. and prussia ended in 1945. from then on it was federal republic of germany (west) and german democratic republic (east) and they exist from 1945 - 1990. prussia was much more bigger than germany after the ww2 - mh i sound like my history teacher ;)

I haven't watch any of those versions that people are mentioning here yet and I know that whichever I'll watch first I'll spoil the other one for myself (surely I'll watch both of them anyway).. it's always the first one that gives you the best impression.. :(

Thank you SO much for uploading this with subtitles! On another note, in my personal opinion, the 1958 version is good but it lacks the power, drama, and charm of the original 1931 version. It's just too bad the 1931 version is not available on DVD...I am forced to illicitly download it off of Youtube (hehe).

Their kiss, the glances, etc. Romy and Lilli's chemistry were hot as far as I'm concerned. They're beautiful women who worked together well in this film. I was totally turned on by them I must admit<3

I've got a question -- if this is supposed to take place in England, why are the characters speaking German?
Also, didn't the original 1931 version take place in Germany, not England? Why did they change the setting in this 1958 version?

no this is not took place in england . it took place in east of germany . mrs evans is an english teacher in this german school

One question! Ive seen the original. From 1931. Is this one the best, or is the original the best? i havent seen the 1958 version yet. so i just wanted to know, before watching it. :)

i saw that version too and i think this is better . though 1931 version is more well known because nazi banned it
