I love the garage style. It´s the first time I´m listening to the Gants but not the last time. I´m from the northern part of Europe. At that time, mid 60s, we were "flooded" by the English rock wave, but also from Sweden. Check up THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". The recordings were made 1965. It´s raw and honest irresistible garage rock. No samples only a couple of mic:s and than count to four. But the intro is 7/4 - not bad at all!!!!!!!!!!
This was a great cover of the old Johnny Burnette song & it deserved a nice garage band touch. Garage band music started more or less when The Kingsmen released the FBI investigated "Louie Louie" cover. I guess it's like rap.
Everyone thinks it started in the 70's -- but I trace it back to the 50's: Iceberg Slim & Lord Buckley. Rock & roll? I hear it in Lionel Hampton's "Hampton's Boogie," & before that -- the rural 30's blues. I think rock & roll's DNA could trace back to the 20's.
this is going to sound like a really ignorant thing for me to say, but i had no idea there was a garage band scene in mid-60s mississippi. thanks for expanding my horizons.

The Gants were good enough for nation-wide success.
