Model ALC-5 Self-opening lens cap for the Panasonic DMC-LX5

DMC-LX3 users know you can jam a Ricoh LC-1 Lens Cap on the camera,
even though it wasn't made for it.

But when Panasonic released the DMC-LX5, people found that it has a different threading so it doesn't fit anymore without "severe" modifications.

I was looking for a lens cap myself, when I heard about this and found one over eBay for $15-20. No modifications necessary, and it is certainly much better than the old cap on a string.

  • hello, how does it work with the zoom?

  • @Zendaii

The lens just pushes the 3 covers to the side.

When the lens retracts, the covers push inwards.

No vignetting really. The springs aren't strong enough to fight against the lens zoom so there shouldn't be any problems in the long run.

  • Thank god your not changing an M42 lens lol. Good video.

  • @simonspiers

Haha, I once bought an M42 lens thinking it would fit my Pentax film SLR.

Turns out my camera was a K-Mount...

  • Thanks for the helpful video...what music is that playing in the background? Lovely!

  • @Edsta92

    Thanks!

Music is Sleep Away - by Bob Acri

Came with windows 7 as a sort of sample music.

Some times when the lens retracts a bit during certain zoom settings, there will be minor vignetting.

There is a very simple and very effective mod to fix that, instructions are here on youtube too I think. I recall it's just a matter of gluing some rubber piping gaskets such that the lens cap opens wider no matter what zoom position.

    Great video!

  • Great idea and invention, I just bought mine on the bay for my precious LX5 :)

Strap came with the camera. Nice, durable leather with white stitching. (probably imitation leather)

Has white Lumix lettering on it.

I had it strapped only on one side like a lanyard.
