Hi there, wonderful video. I also had a question, hopefully you can help me out.
I have been training my mare in pleasure for a few months now and we have now entered the realm of cantering. My mare is pretty unbalanced in it and whenever I pick up the reins for her to start lowering her head and collecting, she will slow down as if I wanted her to stop. Do you have any tips that could help?
I really appreciate it! Thanks :)

one thing i just dont get and never have how do you teach horses that 3 beated gait of the lope becuase canter has a different beat right not just faster then the lope so how do you teach the different beat of the feet

@pecoslover97 Hi Pecoslover, just visited this video and saw your comment from a long time ago....actually, the beats for a lope and canter dont change ....from my perspective, and im sure some may argue, but I believe the lope to be a higher level of collection which slows the speed down and does have an affect on the ground distance covered per stride, naturally....the goal of the lope is to keep that same fluidity and as much of the reachiness as the canter at a slower pace...this is only

accomplished by teaching the horse how to respond by bending his lumbar, stifles, and hocks more when you "half halt" him...or cue him to slow down....too often riders mistake a "temporary hiccup" in the speed as an actual slow down...rather than an actual melting of the body to relax into a lower RPM / impulsion for a lower speed ....they should decrease in sync so that marginally the amount of drive or impulsion at the canter is the same as the RPMs of the lope, just on a

"lower level" as far as speed goes....I tell my people to exhale and relax back and allow the horse to adjust his body weight so that he's more anchored in back which creates a natural slow down that stays beyond your hand holding his face.....so that when you release, he doesnt immediately squirt forward again...hope Im making sense....sometimes my thoughts go faster than my hands...

@KaciEllenJ
Thank you very much....when you use "universal" techniques that are in line with a horse's anatomy it shouldn't matter what discipline you do, the basic mechanics and how to supple them up for maximum use/performance of their body is all the same...:) :) You obviously understand that! Wish you well with all your barrel racing season this next year!
