A stuttering Everton, whose season had failed to ignite, again threatened to gain momentum with a stylish 2.0 win, thanks to goals from Andy King and Bob Latchford, against Derby County at Goodison Park in November. This game, though, represented the last throw of the league dice for Everton that season for they were heavily beaten in their next two league games - prompting the board to finance a double swoop for Duncan McKenzie and Bruce Rioch in an attempt to revive sagging spirits - and indeed it would be late February until they registered their next Division One victory. Despite progress in the cups and the signings of McKenzie and Rioch, little did manager Billy Bingham realise that this autumn win against the Rams would be his last league victory with Everton before his dismissal in mid-January.
