German royals in the uniform of the Life Guard Hussars, distinguishable by the large 'death's head' (totenkopf) insignia on their busbies. At the time this symbol did not have so sinister a reputation. The uniform of black material and skull insignia was first adopted as a sign of mourning for a recently deceased Prussian king.
