a sampling of the comments on the sure to be famous Joplin tornado (http://youtu.be/cQnvxJZucds) video as they appear in the real time.

Since the original video has no picture and only sound (horrifying enough on its own) I wanted to see what would happen if the viewer comments and the sound were juxtaposed.

The comments range from heartless to compassionate to evangelical and serve as a reminder that the anonymity of the web can cause people to speak in ways they'd never have spoken in more personal situations.

Indeed, the speed of the web and the tools that live on it (YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc) allow people from all over the world to share in the pain, loss, and distress of events like this tornado. But are videos like this consumed for thrills? Pieces of fluff to be shared around the office? Do people gain from being the "first" to share this video on their Facebook page the same way news stations used to claim exclusive scoops to stories only they had access to?
