I always thought that this scene could have been one of the greatest tweest in cinema history if kevin would have chosen the "apocalipse" ending making that religious group been right the whole time after how the movie developed up till that point. That would have been fantastic.

It was a single angel that kills everyone except Goodman with a sword.

that was not the ending. It was all the peoples chest exploding. John Goodman ducks down on the ground. When the commotion stops, he looks up to see an Angel pulling a sword out of Michael Parks and it tells him, "Shhhhh." Then fly's away with the four horsemen.
