In 2004, Central Texas Gardener taped Madalene Hill and her daughter Gwen Barclay at The International Festival-Institute at Round Top, where Madalene was curator of the extensive gardens and Gwen served as Food Service Director.
Madalenes acclaim in the gardening world began many years before that, when she and her husband opened Hilltop Herb Farm, preparing delicious meals that featured the herbs she grew. She also served as president of the Herb Society of America.
With her daughter Gwen, she authored Southern Herb Growing, an essential reference on growing and using herbs.
Her dedication and research into the cultivation and applications of herbal plants introduced techniques and varieties to new gardeners worldwide. Madalene was also tireless in her hands-on lessons to share her extensive knowledge.
Madalene Hill passed away on March 5, 2009, but the plants she discovered and the knowledge she cultivated in many others lives on.
I still have your mother's rose geranium jelly recipe! <3
