Curse You, SOPA

...Oh. Ok, I guess SOPA and PIPA have totally fucked me over, so...I can still TRY to entertain you! Yeah! It'll be like old-time radio! Hahahahaha...heh...uh...

... ... ... ... ...

But seriously, it looks like, in reality, for the moment, SOPA and PIPA have been indefinitely suspended. Namely, SOPA has been pulled from the U.S. House of Representatives by its chief sponsor, Lamar Smith, who said, "It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products."

These bills, as they were, would've given the government far too much power to control the Internet. My main issue with them, especially SOPA, was that the language was so vague and broad that sites such as YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter, etc., could become potential targets. Anything that could potentially ruin the communities that sites like these have created for me and many others isn't something that I can support, and it seems that a cavalcade of people have risen up to express their outrage as well.

I'd like to think that such massive outcries from the common folks like you and me, the widespread blackout protests by major sites such as Google and Wikipedia, and the actions of the "hacktivist" group Anonymous, is really what caused the retraction of SOPA from the House, but regardless of who should get the credit for what, I think this overall shows the power of the people when they actually band together for something, along with the power of the Internet as a whole.
